About 10 PM we got to Drobeta Turnu Severin (this part of the ride was the same as the previous one) and stopped there for the night. We left the bikes in the parking, and walked to a cab. The good thing about cab drivers (in fact the only thing, if I think about their chaotic driving manners) is that they know the places to eat cheap and good. And this time was true as well. We grab something to eat, a couple of beers and start storytelling from the French Alps motorcycle tour we took in the summer.
The next morning we woke up and headed to the border crossing to Serbia. Weather wasn’t looking so fine:
We crossed Danube at the “Portile de fier” (The Iron Gates - the biggest hydroelectric power plant in Europe):
And the first “step” on the Serbian side:
Ok, this time you can see in the distance the Romanian shore. Look how big Danube is getting here:
My biker buddy:
Ok. From being huge, Danube gets to a very narrow passage between mountains, called the Danube boiler – the water seems to be boiling:
Madalina was still enjoying the trip (it wasn’t raining yet :
And doing some commenting on the road so far:
And some more Danube:
OK. That’s an important place where I wanted to go since a few years ago and never had the chance (but now it’s a dream come true). If you look, you can see on the Romanian shore, carved in the mountain rock, the face of the king Decebal – from the Roman times:
Nice road:
A bit of map reading:
And some more riding:
Small villages along the way:
New stop: we decide to cross the Danube on a boat and not the regular bridge:
OK. By this time it got quite windy and without planing we experienced a small storm over the Danube. The start looks peaceful enough:
but it got to be like this later:
Never thought this stripe of tarmac would look so wonderful after the crossing:
